I view my work as a personal microcosm of the natural world. Within the confines of a frame, I strive to construct a world distinctly apart from our own. I explore the emotional ties between poetry and painting, creating symbolic dichotomies and delicate balances to express the interconnections among nature, art, human emotions, place, and time.
Yasmeen Abdullah is a distinguished Sudanese visual artist residing and creating in Khartoum, Sudan. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Yasmeen’s affinity for painting was evident from an early age. Born and raised in Qatar, she eagerly participated in art contests, buoyed by her family’s support. However, upon their return to Sudan, Yasmeen faced a stark lack of art education in the elementary schools of her small town, a challenge that persisted through her high school years. Despite these obstacles, she was fortunate to gain admission to the College of Fine and Applied Arts at SUST, where she pursued and completed her degree, albeit while grappling with her artistic identity. Post-graduation, Yasmeen began teaching painting at the college, all the while seeking her unique artistic voice.
A transformative moment in Yasmeen’s artistic journey came through her engagement with the works of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. His poignant poetry struck a chord with her, inspiring her to integrate his themes into her artwork. Women frequently feature as central figures in Yasmeen’s art; she endeavors to portray them with a personal touch that simultaneously resonates on a universal level. Darwish’s elegant depictions of women facilitated a delicate balance in Yasmeen’s work, enabling her to weave personal introspection with broader societal commentary.
In her artistic endeavors, Yasmeen aspires to construct an alternative universe within her canvases—one that transcends the mundane and invites viewers into a vibrant, living experience. Her goal is for viewers to transcend the awareness of observing mere paint on canvas, entering instead into a vividly reimagined reality. Driven by a passion to continually refine her practice, Yasmeen is committed to discovering innovative ways to transform poetry into compelling visual stories that engage and envelop her audience.
